The Spine: Key to Relieving Your Pain

Last updated 1 year ago

When you develop a spinal condition or suffer a spinal injury, it often turns out that your pain is not limited to the area in which the problem has manifested. It is for this reason that spinal issues can be so debilitating. Get more insight into the spine’s role in the body’s overall health and comfort by reading below:

Spinal Anatomy

The spine consists of an interconnecting latticework of vertebral bone, cushioned by spinal discs and connected to the rest of the body through an intricate maze of ligaments, tendons, and muscles. The spine is also the primary avenue through which the nervous system communicates messages of pain to and from the brain and throughout the rest of the body.

Problems with the Spine

Due to the spine’s anatomy and the way in which the nervous system branches from the spinal cord and into the body’s extremities, it is extremely common for pain felt within the spine to radiate outward into other areas. Unfortunately, this can make spinal disturbances difficult to diagnose, as pain in the hands, arms, legs, and feet cannot always be easily traced back to nerve damage, a ruptured disc, or a vertebral fracture within the spine.

Therapy and Treatment

Because of the spine’s critical role in the body’s ability to move comfortably, spinal specialists have striven to create holistic treatment plans for almost every spinal issue. In almost all situations, physical therapy or alternative methods accompany medicinal and surgical treatments. In addition, great strides have been made in the minimally invasive spinal surgery arena, allowing patients a shorter recovery time and lowering their risk of nerve damage, chronic pain, and paralysis during the procedure.
