The piriformis muscle is responsible for the lateral rotation of the hip. It is particularly important for athletes, but a tight or inflamed piriformis muscle can cause pain deep in the hip and buttock for anyone. Stretching and strengthening a tight or weak piriformis muscle can reduce any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing.
